Kobe City Manufacturing Factory (formerly known as the Reconstruction Factory) is Japan's largest publicly-owned rental factory complex. It supports small and medium-sized manufacturers and those seeking to advance manufacturing technologies as a manufacturing hub, driving the revitalization of the city's industry. We proposed the “Monoterrace,” integrating the building's rest area with an adjacent warehouse to create a space that serves both as a startup incubator and a rest area. We simulated traffic flow from the semi-enclosed passageway and the division of activity zones, planning to place the open space (rest area) in the section facing outdoors. For security reasons, the startup area was separated from the open space, but partitions were set at 2 to 2.4 meters high to maintain a sense of human presence while matching the height to each space. Leveraging the factory's characteristic point-like height variations, beams were placed only within the open space area, creating a sense of transition between the old and new atmospheres. The furniture and sofa benches feature a simple, functional, and timeless design that incorporates the factory's unique character. Part of the signage plan was also revised, enabling flexible furniture arrangements that accommodate not only regular factory users but also visitors during seminars and events.​
